  • [01] Shrove Monday celebrated throughout Greece

(ÁÍÁ-ÌPA) -- "Shrove Monday", better known in Greece as "Clean Monday", was celebrated throughout the east Mediterranean country on Monday, March 7, 2011. The religious holiday marks the first day of the "Great Lent", and is often considered as the unofficial beginning of spring, although frigid temperatures and snow in most of the north of Greece dampened any hopes of an early spring. Family picnics replete with Lenten meals, kite-flying and an array of local traditions and feasts take place throughout Greece and Cyprus. Thessaloniki residents are pictures at the northern city's Seich-sou Park flying kites. ANA-MPA / S. BARBAROUSSIS.

    [02] Rehn: Ease bailout terms

(ANA-MPA) -- European Union Economic and Monetary Affairs Commissioner Olli Rehn on Saturday was quoted as stressing that European governments should ease bailout terms for EU member-states Greece and Ireland amid talks to resolve the current punishing debt crisis.

He was quoted by the Dusseldorf daily "Handelsblatt".

"Both countries need lower interest rates on aid loans, and Greeceâs repayment period should be extended to seven years from four-and-a-half years," the high-profile EU Commissioner was quoted as saying. (ANA-MPA)

    [03] Gov't blasts downgrading

(ANA-MPA) -- Greece's finance ministry on Monday termed the most recent downgrading of the country's economy by Moody's as "completely unjustified", in a relevant announcement made hours after the development.

According to the ministry, the decision is not based on an "objective and balanced evaluation of the economic conditions being faced by Greece."

Moreover, it charges that the downgrading and the specific timing selected by the ratings firm "make it incomprehensible, and raise serious questions". (ANA-MPA)
