A new collection of postage stamps dedicated to American philhelleneswill be on sale at US post offices as of April 19, celebrated in Greece as the Day of Philhellenism and International Solidarity. The collection honors the Americans who fought and died in the struggle for Greek Independence.

The stamp series "Association of American Philhellenes 1810-1840" features an image of the grave of George Jarvis, a portrait of Samuel Gridley Howe and the emblem of the Association of American Philhellenes, according to the Greek service of the Voice of America.

The decision to issue the series was made following an initiative by association president Panagiotis Nikolopoulos.

April 19 was proclaimed Philhellenism and International Solidarity Day by the Greek Parliament, commemorating the anniversary of the death of the famous poet and philhellene Lord Byron.

    [02] 'Last chance for economy'

(ANA-MPA) -- Bank of Greece (BoG) Governor George Provopoulos on Monday called for greater determination by the government in promoting reforms, underlining that the Medium-term Fiscal Consolidation Programme - announced last week -- was the "last chance" for restarting the Greek economy.

Presenting the central bankâs annual report, Provopoulos noted (ANA-MPA) that "promoting reforms was lacking behind the pact needed and often their implementation was delayed either because of civil administration bureaucracy or because authorities are hesitating in view of public reactions".

    [04] ND: Renegotiation of Memorandum

(ANA-MPA)-Main opposition New Democracy (ND) on Tuesday insisted on the renegotiation of the Memorandum (signed with the EU and IMF), stressing that a revision of its terms is necessary and feasible.

"Our goal is a drastic change of the memorandum terms," ND spokesman Yiannis Mihelakis stated, adding that ND leader Antonis Samaras has made this suggestion repeatedly. (ANA-MPA)

"The Irish premier has managed through negotiations to overturn two unfavorable terms of the memorandum signed by the countryâs preceding government," Mihelakis said, adding that European Commissioner Olli Rehn has left open the possibility of renegotiation.(ANA-MPA)

The ND spokesman stressed that the policy mix implemented by the government is wrong. "The government is ineffectiveâ¦the country sinks deeper and deeper into recession," he said.(ANA-MPA)

As regards the reconstruction issue, he said "in a crucial moment for the countryâs economy disaster scenarios are not helping". Commenting on the privatization plan unveiled by the government, he reminded that "all privatizations launched by the preceding government have stopped," adding that the updated ND positions will be unveiled in the scheduled presentation of its proposals in Zappeion 2.(ANA-MPA)
