  • [01] A legendary warship turns 100

(ANA-MPA) -- The armoured cruiser Averof, the flagship of the Hellenic Navy for four decades until the vesselâs decommissioning in 1952, this year celebrates the centennial of the beginning of its active service -- May 16, 1911.

The Averof, named after early 20th century Greek benefactor Georgios Averof and constructed in Livorno, Italy, played a leading role in liberating the Aegean islands from Ottoman rule during the first Balkan War. The vessel saw extensive duty in WWI and even served as an Allied escort vessel in the Indian Ocean during WWII.

Today the legendary warship serves as a maritime museum and is permanently docked at the Trocadero anchorage off southern coastal Athens. (ANA-MPA)
