  • [01] PM hails decisions at EU leaders' summit

BRUSSELS (ANA-MPA - E. Karanasopoulou) Greece came away from the European Union summit with important decisions in its favour, Greek Prime Minister George Papandreou stressed in a press conference after the end of the summit on Friday.

"We obtained important decisions at the summit. The disbursement of the 5th tranche of 12 billion euros that will allow the smooth running of the state, the payment of wages and pensions. We succeeded in getting new funding and support for the coming years, so that we are not at the mercy of the markets," he stressed.

In this way, Greece would be able to achieve stability and radical changes and the government could devote itself without distractions to strengthening the real economy, Papandreou added.

He particularly emphasised plans to accelerate payouts available to Greece from Community structural funds, in order to boost growth and create jobs in the country.

Papandreou explained during the press conference that the size of the second bailout package for Greece will depend on the extent of participation by private investors, who have been asked to rollover existing bonds in order to ease Greece's debt burden.

It is expected, however, that the second package of loans will amount to another 110 billion euro for the next three years. ANA-MPA

[02] Special Olympics 2011 open on Saturday

(ÁÍÁ-ÌPA) -- One day remains before the official launch of the 2011 Summer Special Olympics in Athens, beginning with the opening ceremony on Saturday evening at the Panathinaiko Stadium in central Athens, the venue where the first modern Olympic Games were held in 1896.

The Games will bring 7,000 athletes, 2,500 coaches, 40,000 family members and 3,000 representatives of the media from 180 countries to Greece, where 25,000 volunteers will assist them during 10 days of games from June 25 until July 4.

"The Special Olympics are a human monument. They are a revolution of dignity," said the head of the Special Olympics movement Timothy Shriver at an event held in central Athens on Friday.

Referring to the spirit of the Special Olympics, he stressed that "our revolution of dignity is global. Our aim is to teach the world to live united, without borders, in peace, unity, dignity and freedom without dividing walls," he said.

Other speakers at the event included Special Olympics athlete and world ambassador David Egan and two-times Special Olympics figure-skating champion Michelle Kwan.

The event was held at a downtown Athens hotel to launch cooperation between the Hilton organisation and the Special Olympics. During the games, the hotel will host an exhibition of the best works by distinguished Special Olympics photographer Richard Corman. (ÁÍÁ-ÌPA)
