More details on the subscriber's page of ANA-MPA | Subscription request form [02] Hooded youths again mar main protest(ANA-MPA) -- The latest nationwide industrial action called by Greece's two main unions against pending austerity measures was again marred by sporadic but high-profile violence in downtown Athens' Syntagma Square on Tuesday afternoon, as hundreds of self-styled anarchist and anti-state youths did their best to turn an otherwise peaceful and massive demonstration into a violent confrontation with riot police.The scene, gaggles of masked youths -- some wearing gas masks -- throwing stones and objects at body armour-clad riot police who, in turn, respond with tear gas, has been played dozens of times over the past decades on Athens' streets. However, on Tuesday this same "scene" was broadcast live by international news agencies and given urgent status by wire services, as the Greek Parliament's 300 MPs will vote on Wednesday over the latest round of austerity measures, tax hikes, continued reforms and accelerated privatisations -- the Medium-term Fiscal Strategic Programme. The latter is expected to determine the fate of continued installments of the 110-billion-euro EC-ECB-IMF bailout for debt-plagued Greece, and, just as importantly, lead the way for a second Memorandum, if necessary. The 48-hour strike was called by the two umbrella trade unions GSEE and ADEDY to express opposition to the mid-term plan. The industrial action mostly affected state-run public transports in the greater Athens area, although the Athens metro was not affected. Additionally, a four-hour work stoppage by air traffic controllers on Tuesday caused numerous flights to be rescheduled. Some state-affiliated banks remained closed, as did the wider public sector. However, most private banks and the vast majority of private businesses around the country -- especially in the hugely important tourism sector -- operated normally. (ANA-MPA) Mainstream media observed a four-hour work stoppage as well, 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. (local time). According to eyewitness reports from the scene, the larger bulk of protesters -- nearer to Parliament on the eastern side of Syntagma Square -- attempted to deflect and ward off the masked youths in order for the peaceful mobilisations to continue. Both GSEE and ADEDY, representing the private sector and civil servants, respectively, maintained that the first day of the 48-hour strike action was met with success, although a protest rally organised at a smaller square a few kilometres from Syntagma -- Pedion tou Areos -- was disappointing in size. Market sentiment was also encouraged by a positive response to a French plan over the participation of private investors in a second bailout package for Greece.The composite index rose 2.66 pct to end at 1,258.84 points, with turnover rising to 84.104 million euros. The Big Cap index jumped 3.26 pct, the Mid Cap index ended 3.23 pct higher and the Small Cap index rose 2.64 pct. All blue chip stocks ended higher with Ellaktor (10.65 pct), Hellenic Postbank (10 pct), MIG (6.67 pct) and Eurobank (5.84 pct) scoring the biggest percentage gains of the day. Banks (4.74 pct), Raw Materials (4.67 pct) and Constructions (4.21 pct) were top gainers, while Media (8.16 pct) and Commerce (0.95 pct) suffered losses. Broadly, advancers led decliners by 100 to 30 with another 40 issues unchanged.
