  • [01] FM at SEECP summit in Montenegro

ÁÍÁ-ÌPÁ/The situation in the Balkans and expansion of cooperation among the South Eastern European Cooperation Process (SEECP) member countries are the focus of an SEECP ministerial meeting on Wednesday and Summit meeting on Thursday in the Montenegrin city of Budva, with foreign minister Stavros Lambrinidis representing Greece.

Wednesday's foreign ministers' meeting reviewed the situation in the wider region, and also the activities of Montenegro's outgoing presidency of the SEECP.

The Summit Meeting on Friday is slated to adopt the annual report of the Regional Cooperation Council's (RCC) Secretary General on cooperation in SE Europe 2010-2011.

Lambrinidis also had sideline meetings with counterparts from SE European countries on Wednesday, including Montenegrin minister of foreign affairs and European integration Milan Rocen and Turkish foreign minister Ahmet Davutoglu.

During his meeting with Rocen, a Memorandum of Cooperation was signed between Greece and Montenegro, while Rocen also thanked the Greek minister for Greece's backing for the European integration of Montenegro and the Western Balkan countries.

He also backed the Greek government's "Agenda 2014" initiative for EU accession of all the western Balkan states by 2014, and endorsed Greece's intention to organise a joint EU-Balkans conference during Greece's EU presidency in 2014.ana-mpa

Lambrinidis also had his first meeting, as foreign minister, with Turkish FM Davutoglu, during which bilateral relations, the economic situation in Europe and Turkey's EU prospect, following incumbent prime minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan's recent electoral victory, were reviewed.

The greatest part of the discussion focused on the situation in Libya, and possible ways out of the crisis were examined.

Davutoglu briefed his new Greek counterpart on progress in the preparations for the 4th meeting of the Contact Group on Libya, to be held on July 15 in Turkey, and Lambrinidis informed his Turkish counterpart that he will be taking part in that meeting.ana-mpa

The two ministers further discussed preparations underway for the 2nd meeting of the Greece-Turkey High Level Cooperation Council that will take place in the neighboring country.
