  • [01] Eurozone summit 'decisive' for Greece, EU

Thursday's eurozone summit in Brussels will be "decisive" for the future of Greece and the EU, the Greek government said on Wednesday, as prime minister George Papandreou prepared to depart later in the day for the Belgian capital.

In a written statement, government spokesman Elias Mossialos said the summit will be decisive for Greece's and Europe's future, adding that the Greek prime minister "is waging the battle to guarantee that Greece will remain standing, with hope and a prospect for its citizens".

The premier is "waging the battle for the debt to be viable and for the burdens on the citizens to be reduced, for protection of deposits and boosting of liquidity on the market", Mossialos said.

"These, for us, are the red lines that serve the national interest," the government spokesman added.

Papandreou, addressing a broad government meeting on Tuesday, stressed that selective default is not an option for the Greek government.

The Greek premier is expected to hold separate talks with European leaders ahead of the summit.
