[01] Kea's lesser known antiquities up for preservation
A portion of the fortifications of ancient Karthaia (Karthea) on
the northern Cyclades isle of Kea on Aug. 19, 2011. The ancient site
was one of four city-states on the island, which is also called Tzia
today. The first settlement is dated to the 8th century BC, reaching its
peak during the 6th and 5th centuries BC with a population of roughly
1,500 people. Karthaia was inhabited without interruption until the 7th
century AD, when its residents gradually retreated to better defended
positions in the island's interior. Preservation and a greater promotion
of the site, which just above a secluded beach, will come from a joint
