  • [01] Samaras calls for snap general elections

AMNA--Main opposition New Democracy party (ND) leader Antonis Samaras urgently called for snap elections, in statements after a meeting with President of the Republic Karolos Papoulias at noon Tuesday and on the heels of an announcement Monday night by prime minister George Papandreou that he intends to hold a referendum on the new loan agreement for Greece agreed at a eurozone summit last week.

Samaras said that elections are a "national need" and "everyone must assume their responsibilities".amna

He stressed that ND was determined, at all cost, to avert "opportunistic experimentation", adding that it is able to do so and will do so.

Earlier, heading into the audience with the President, Samaras spoke of a "historic duty to do, in every way, whatever is necessary so that the country's European prospect and future will not fall into misadventures". He also said it is very important that "these plans that exist will not find accomplices, at least in us (ND)".
