  • [01] Samaras: '2-month term for current Papademos gov't'

AMNA / "This is a temporary and transitional government, one created to avoid the country's default," main opposition New Democracy (ND) party leader Antonis Samaras underlined on Friday, addressing an event organised by the Hellenic American Chamber.

Samaras also referred to what he called a "credibility deficit" in the Greek political scene.

"There was no agreement between the political parties on long-term governance. Therefore, how can it be possible to have the government's term extended? How will we govern? We should realise that there is a credibility deficit in the Greek political scene,” he stressed, underlining that "a government that will have to make difficult decisions will not be able to last without having a fresh mandate from the people."

Moreover, he said that, in essence, PASOK did not want the Papademos government, and "now suggests an extension of this government's term to avoid the worst".

Samaras suggested a "haircut" of the old private debt to restore the sustainability of the overall debt, adding that "all these will be on the table in the next two months. That's it."

“PASOK places its own political benefit above national interest and calls, directly or indirectly, for an extension of the present government's term. We insist on normalcy; we do not undermine it. No 'stabilisation programme' can succeed amid conditions of social unrest," he said. www.amna.gr

[02] Christmas bonus spent on current needs, survey

AMNA--Eight out of 10 Greeks will use any additional income that they will receive at Christmas to cover current or extraordinary needs, according to the 11th MasterCard Barometer survey held in Greece on the Greek public's consumer habits.

According to the survey, 60 percent of Greeks will use the additional Christmas income to cover their current needs (40 percent) or will keep it to cover future extraordinary expenses. amna

Last year, Christmas presents were the Christmas bonus' first priority, while this year only the 15 percent of the respondents said they will spend it on presents, posting a 50 percent decrease compared to 2010. One out of three respondents said that extra income does not exist anymore. www.amna.gr

Finally, only 13 percent of the respondents stated that they will spend their additional income for their personal pleasure. The most significant difference between the two sexes is that women's intention (18 percent) is to spend additional income, if they have any, to buy presents for their beloved. amna
