[01] Search continues for major antiquities smuggling ring
AMNA--Law enforcement authorities were on Sunday continuing an
investigation in Macedonia, Thessaly and central Greece to uncover a
major ring of illegal antiquities traders. They have made 44 arrests so
far and recovered more than 8,000 ancient gold and silver coins found
in the possession of the suspects.
Police said the ancient coins are now being counted and a search launched
to discover their origin and value.amna
They have also confiscated several metal detectors, sums of money
and books on the history of the specific coins in the possession of
the suspects.
[02] Earthquake shakes Halkidiki peninsula
AMNA--A moderately strong earthquake measuring 5.0 points on the Richter
scale shook the Halkidiki peninsula in northern Greece early on Saturday,
at around 5:31 a.m.
According to the Thessaloniki University Seismological Station, the
epicentre of the quake was located in the sea between the Sithonia and
Athos 'fingers' of the peninsula, some 109 kilometres east of the city
of Thessaloniki.amna
Though the tremor was strongly felt in the area, there were no victims
or damages reported. It had been preceded by a quake measuring 5.1 on
the Richter scale in the same area on February 14.amna
Seismologists later announced that the pattern of aftershocks was
unfolding in the normal way and provided no cause for alarm.
