    AMNA--Democratic Left leader Fotis Kouvelis said that he had pledged his support to a leftist government led by the Coalition of the Radical Left (SYRIZA), during talks on forming a coalition government with SYRIZA leader Alexis Tsipras on Tuesday.

    Specifically, Kouvelis said that he told Tsipras that he had the option, if he wanted, to proceed with the formation of a leftist government with the support of the Democratic Left and broader Parliamentary legitimisation.amna

    He did not specify whether this also meant that the Democratic Left would participate in such a government.amna

    Before the elections, the Democratic Left had said it would be opposed to a PASOK-New Democracy coalition government but would be prepared to consider a coalition that included PASOK but not ND.

    [03] Ten-day spring offers by stores in downtown Athens

    AMNA--The Athens Traders Association on Tuesday announced that all stores in downtown Athens are invited to offer special discounts for ten days between Thursday, May 17 and Saturday, May 26.

    The action is undertaken within the framework of the initiatives aimed at upgrading the city's commercial district and boosting consumption.

    The Athens Traders Association initiative is a follow-up to "Friday in Athens" action and will have the support of the City of Athens and Technopolis S.A.

    [04] Athens Stock Exchange opening: Rise

    AMNA--Equity prices were rising at the opening of trade on Wednesday on the Athens Stock Exchange (ASE), with the basic share price index up 0.42 percent, standing at 623.36 points at 11:00 am, and turnover at 3.105 million euros.

    The FTSE/ASE 20 index for blue chip and heavily traded stocks was up 0.77 percent, the FTSE/ASE MID 40 index was up 0.92 percent, and the FTSE/ASE-80 small cap index was up 0.37 percent.amna

    Individual sector indices were moving upward, with the biggest gains in Health, up 4.61 percent and Banks, up 2.83 percent.amna

    The only losses were in Telecoms, down 0.96 percent and Constructions, down 0.59 percent.

    Of the stocks traded, 41 were up, 10 were down, and 5 were unchanged.
