  • [01] New parliament sworn in, to be dissolved on Friday

AMNA--The new 300-member parliament that emerged from the inconclusive May 6 general elections was sworn in on Thursday shortly before noon.

The shortest-lived parliament in Greece's history is due to be dissolved on Friday by President of the Republic Karolos Papoulias to pave the way for new elections on June 17.amna

The new parliament, according to the results of the elections earlier this month, comprises seven parties: New Democracy (ND-108 seats), Coalition of the Radical Left (SYRIZA-52 seats), PASOK (41 seats), Independent Greeks (33 seats), Communist Party of Greece (KKE-26 seats), the ultra-right Chryssi Avghi (21 seats), and Democratic Left (DIMAR-19 seats).

[02] Samaras blasts SYRIZA, sets out new elections wager

AMNA--New Democracy (ND) leader Antonis Samaras lashed out at the Coalition of the Radical Left (SYRIZA) party, and outlined the wager of the new elections on June 17, addressing a meeting of his parliamentary group on Thursday just before the parliament that emerged from the May 6 general elections was sworn in.

Samaras warned that there can be no laxness, that "the battle has become, which we will wage with faith and love for the country, a front of determined Greeks".amna

"We will win this battle with unanimity in our positions and contact with the party so that there will be a uniform word against the slogans of populism," he added.

Samaras said his party did everything it could to avoid new elections, noting that "the battle concerns whether Greece will remain in Europe as Europe changes, or whether we will find ourselves out of Europe".

[03] Olympic Flame handover for London Games

AMNA--The Olympic Flame will be handed over to the organisers of the 2012 Olympic Games in London on Thursday evening, after burning overnight on an altar before the Acropolis.

After a torch relay through Greece that began with the traditional ceremony at ancient Olympia on May 10, the Olympic Flame will be presented to Princess Anne in a ceremony attended by Greek President Karolos Papoulias at the Panathenian Stadium in Athens, which hosted the first-ever modern Olympic Games in 1896.amna

The last runners in the Greek torch relay will be Greek Olympic gold medallist weightlifter Pyrros Dimas and Chinese Olympic medallist Li Ning, who lit the Olympic Flame in the stadium of the Beijing Games, creating a link between the past and present Olympic Games.amna

Greek Olympic Committee President Spyros Kapralos will then present the Olympic Torch to the Princess Royal, who is president of the British Olympic Association and a former Olympian. The princess will be accompanied by a delegation that will include former England football team captain David Beckham, who is to light the Olympic Torch from the lantern that the princess will carry off the plane once it touches down on UK soil in Cornwall on Friday evening, and UK Olympic medallist Sebastian Coe.
