  • [01] NATO: No FYROM accession without prior solution of name issue

New York (AMNA/P. Panagiotou) -- The 2008 NATO summit in Bucharest decision that FYROM will be eligible for membership in the Alliance only after the solution of the name issue will be explicitly in the conclusions of this year's two-day summit that opened in Chicago on Sunday, where Greece is represented by caretaker foreign minister Petros Molyviatis.amna

The Alliance further notes that a resolution of the name issue will contribute to the stability and security of the region, thus underlining the regional dimension of the issue.amna

Further, the Alliance calls for a speedy resolution of the name issue, and also encourages FYROM to continue its efforts and the efforts for building a multinational society.

"Some isolated attempts were made to alter the Bucharest decision, but failed," said Molyviatis, who had the opportunity to hold sideline talks with a number of heads of state and government.amna

He said the main topic of the first day talks was the reorganisation of the Alliance so that it will be in a position to meet the challenges and threats of the 21st century, adding that the talks were successful both on that issue and on the other topics discussed.amna

As regards FYROM, he said that indeed some behind-the-scenes and isolated attempts were made to alter the Bucharest decision, adding: "Those attempts failed. The Summit reaffirmed the Bucharest summit decisions, and this it is confirmed that the neighbouring country will be invited to join NATO only after the name issue has been resolved," Molyviatis told reporters after the relevant decision was taken on Sunday night (early Monday, Greek time).

[04] Sanctuary devoted to Artemis Lykoatis uncovered in Arcadia

AMNA-- A sanctuary dedicated to the ancient Greek goddess Artemis Lykoatis, the only known sanctuary in Greece dedicated to the mythical goddess with this topographical epithet, has been discovered in Arcadia during excavations by archaeologists of the Finnish Institute at Athens.

According to Greek mythology, Artemis is the daughter of Zeus and Leto and the twin sister of Apollo. She is known as the virgin moon goddess of the hunt, wild animals, healing, wilderness and chastity, but also, paradoxically, of childbirth, since she assisted her mother in the delivery of her twin, and was worshipped as a goddess of fertility and childbirth.amna

The epithet Lykoatis comes from a temple dedicated to her at Lykoa, in Arcadia, mentioned by Pausanias (Paus. 8.36.5-8) on his way from Megalopolis to the mountain of Mainalos, with which the sanctuary uncovered has been identified after two years of systematic excavations.amna

The Finnish Institute at Athens began research in the area in 2006, near the church of Aghia Paraskevi in Arachamites (Arachamitai), Arcadia, while systematic excavations were begun in 2010.amna

The excavations turned up a small sanctuary dating from the mid-6th century BC to the end of the 1st century BC. Subsequent excavations brought to light a rectangular structure built in the first half of the 2nd century BC, apparently belonging to the sanctuary, which was destroyed in the last decades of the 1st century BC.amna

The 27th annual presentation of the Finnish Institute's studies and finds will take place on Friday evening, at 7:00 p.m., at the premises of the Italian Archaeological School in Athens.
