    AMNA--New Democracy (ND) leader Antonis Samaras, visiting the heavily migrant-populated Athens district of Aghios Panteleimonas on Friday, said that safety is a "sacred right".

    Samaras spoke with local residents, who described with the darkest colors the situation they face daily and asked for initiatives to deal with the burning problems of illegal immigration and crime.

    Replying, Samaras said that "we will find again the Athens we knew, the neighborhoods we knew", and pledged to clamp down on illegal immigration, but clarified that this would not be accomplished through people taking the law into their own hands but with laws and with the support of Europe.amna

    "Safety is a sacred right in a proper democracy, for every Greek man and woman," he said, adding that "we will accomplish this".

    Samaras was due to visit the General Police Headquarters (GADA) afterwards.

    [02] Antiquities smugglers arrested in Thessaloniki

    AMNA--A golden wreath dating back to the 4th century BC and a gold bracelet of the same era, both of invaluable archaeological and commercial worth, were found in the possession of two antiquities smugglers from Komotini, northeastern Greece, who were arrested on Friday in Asprovalta, northern Greece.

    One of the suspects is a retired policeman aged 60 and the second suspect a house-painter aged 41.

    Police, acting on information that they had collected in the last period, had set up a roadblock for the two men who were in a car heading for Thessaloniki where it is believed they intended to sell the antiquities.amna

    A search in their car revealed hidden beneath the co-driver's seat a box containing the two objects, a wreath and a bracelet depicting curling snakes forming a "Hercules knot.

    During the investigation the 41-year-old admitted that he was the 'owner' of the objects which came from illegal excavations. The other suspect, according to initial information, was responsible for finding buyers for the antiquities

    The antiquities confiscated and are being examined by archaeologists, while a case file has been drawn up against the two men for violation of the law on "Protection of Antiquities and Cultural Heritage" .amna

    The two suspects will be sent before a Thessaloniki prosecutor

    [03] Inflation slows to 1.4pct in May

    AMNA--Inflation slowed substantially in May 2012, running at 1.4 percent in May 2012 against a rise of 1.9 percent in the preceding month of April and a 3.3 percent increase in May 2011, according to figures released on Friday by the independent Hellenic Statistical Authority (ELSTAT). On a monthly basis inflation in May posted a 0.3 percent reduction over April, compared with a 0.2 percent rise in the same period last year.

    ELSTAT, in a report, said that the Consumer Price Index (CPI) in May 2012 compared with May 2011, increased by 1.4%. In May 2011, the annual rate of change of the CPI was 3.3%.amna

    The CPI in May 2012 compared with April 2012 decreased by 0.3%. In May 2011, the monthly rate of change of the CPI was 0.2%.

    In the twelve-month period from June 2011 to May 2012 compared with the period from June 2010 to May 2011 the annual average rate of change of the CPI was 2.3%. The corresponding annual average rate of change of the CPI in the previous year (June 2010 to May 2011), was 4.9%.
