  • [01] Football diplomacy arises ahead of Greece-Germany match

BERLIN (AMNA) - German Chancellor Angela Merkel, replying to a press question on whether she would like new Greek Prime Minister Antonis Samaras to also be in Gdansk on Friday to watch the football match between Germany and Greece (for the Euro 2012 quarter-finals), replied that "I would be pleased if he came, but he himself must see if he can."

"On my part, I would be pleased if he came. Of course, he must see if he can. He himself must say this. I cannot speak on his behalf." amna

Referring to the match, the German Chancellor said, "... it will be a good sports event. I hope a very fair sports event."

[02] Scuffles outside steel mill as workers breach picket line

AMNA / Scuffles and minor injuries were reported on Thursday at the entrance of the Hellenic Steel company, in the Aspropyrgos industrial district, west of the port of Piraeus.

Approximately 40 workers, described as mostly administrative employees, reportedly broke through a picket line and entered the building in order to begin working.

A union representing Hellenic Steel workers has been on strike for 235 consecutive days, despite a court decision ruling the strike illegal on procedural points.

A meeting amongst the strikers, officials of the labour ministry and representatives of the employer was scheduled to take place on Thursday, however, the meeting was was later cancelled. Reports state that management representatives did not attend the meeting.

The steel mill strike has bitterly divided the plant's workforce into two main 'camps', namely, those demanding the right to work and those upholding the strike in response to recent management decisions cutting wages and work days.

The Communist Party-affiliated PAME labour grouping has also actively supported the strikers, with affiliated cadres outside the plant.

[03] Shipowners to new gov't: Cut red tape to attract investments

AMNA--The London-based Greek shipowners lobby, better known as the Committee, on Thursday publicised its proposal towards the new Samaras government for an immediate re-establishment of an independent merchant marine ministry, while also returning the coast guard under the jurisdiction of the ministry.

Moreover, the influential group said a reduction in red tape and increasing transparency are basic conditions for the east Mediterranean country to attract more and urgently needed shipping investments.amna

The announcement came on a day when the Committee is holding its annual general assembly for the election of a new board.amna

According to a yearly report on the occasion of the general assembly, the proposals towards the Greek government were issued before the June 17 election.

Committee President Haralambos Fafalios, who presented the report on the Greek-owned shipping - which still comprises the biggest portion of the international maritime transport sector - called on the new Greek government to better exploit the country's strong position as a major maritime power, adding that the shipping sector will be a primary factor for the country's growth. amna

He also cited what he called a trend by younger generations of Greeks to follow a career in the merchant marine and the success of the recent Poseidonia 2012 exhibition in Athens.
