Athens' targets in view of the next visit by the Troika as agreed at Wednesday's meeting of the three-party coalition leaders Prime Minister and New Democracy (ND) leader Antonis Samaras, PASOK leader Evangelos Venizelos and Democratic Left (DIMAR) leader Fotis Kouvelis mostly dominated the front-page headlines in Athens' dailies on Thursday.

[02] Wildfire raging NE of Patras, Hania blaze subsiding

The two fronts of the fire, which broke out at dawn Wednesday, are burning near the communities of Platani and Aghios Georgios (Drepani), and heading eastwards. Five fire-fighting planes resumed water-dropping at dawn in an effort to contain the fire's advancement, aided by subsiding winds.

The other fronts, which are burning near the communities of Sella, Argyra, Ano Kastritsi and Kato Kastritsi, are reported to be subsiding after efforts by a strong firefighting force to keep the flames at bay and away from homes.

Meanwhile, a major fire that broke out Wednesday afternoon in Kissamos, Hania prefecture on the island of Crete was subsiding on Thursday morning.

The fire erupted between the areas of Vathy, Papadiana, Kefali and Amygdalokefali, burning forest and pasture expanses, and causing serious damage to at least 10 homes in the communities of Papadiana, Vathy, Theodoriana, Simantiriana, Amygdalokefali and Plokamiana.

The flames devoured olive trees, pine trees, livestock and beehives, according to Kissamos deputy mayor Michalis Mountakis, who told AMNA that the fire began in the Aghios Athanassios region and was quickly fanned by high winds into a blazing front of over 20 kilometers.

The fire was contained early on Thursday morning after all-night efforts by a strong firefighting team on the ground assisted by volunteers, while a water-dropping helicopter joined them at first light of day.

[03] Cup for first-ever Olympic marathon on show at new Acropolis Museum

In the meantime, the Foundation selected the new Acropolis Museum as a venue that combined maximum security with ease of access for the public and has prepared supporting audiovisual and printed material surrounding the cup and its history.

During the year-long exhibition at the Acropolis Museum, the foundation will continue efforts to find other potentially suitable venues that could temporarily display the cup until 2015, when its own arts centre is due to be completed.
