  • [01] Large cannabis haul found aboard abandoned speedboat after chase

AMNA/ Nearly 900 kilos of cannabis was found aboard a speedboat on Sunday southeast of Ithaca island after a chase, and the boat's two passengers were wanted, the Coastguard said.

A Coastguard patrol boat approached the speedboat on Sunday morning to conduct a random search, but the two men on board the speedboat ignored the Coastguard's instructions and sped off.

A chase ensued, with the assistance of two more patrol boats from nearby Zakynthos and Cephallonia.

The two men abandoned the speedboat near a remote beach on Cephallonia and fled after dumping packages of cannabis overboard into the sea.

The island was being combed by authorities to locate the suspects, while the speedboat and narcotics were seized and transferred to port in Cephallonia.

It was revealed on Monday that a total 833.45 kilograms of cannabis was recovered in 585 packets

[02] Three die after bus falls over cliff on Chios

AMNA/ The death toll from an accident early Monday on Chios island after a KTEL intercity bus fell into a ravine and burst into flames climbed to three later in the morning as one of the injured passengers, a 56-year-old woman, died in surgery.

Two people were killed on the spot and nine others were injured when a KTEL intercity bus fell into a ravine and burst into flames on the island of Chios early Monday morning. Later, one of the injured succumbed to her wounds while in surgery.

The bus was conducting the Pantikios-Sykiada route when at about 8:30 a.m. it veered off course, for unknown reasons, as it was approaching the village of Sykiada and fell into the ravine, catching fire which spread to the surrounding area.

Twenty firefighters with 10 fire engines rushed to the site and extinguished the flames, and recovered the two bodies.

Nine other people were injured, of which one succumbed to her wounds during surgery. Firefighters are searching for possible other victims.
