  • [01] Israeli envoy on Gaza crisis

AMNA / Israeli ambassador to Greece Arye Meckel told a press conferenece in Athens on Tuesday that his country wanted an agreement that would guarantee the end of firing rockets against its territory from the Gaza Strip.

"Israel wants to reach an agreement which will guarantee the end of firing rockets against its territory from the Gaza Strip, as well as the halt of the illegal import of arms in it through Egypt," Meckel said.

The Israeli envoy added that for achieving an agreement, his country looked forward to Egypt, "which is an important country and a significant player in the Arab world, as well as to the seriousness of it leaders." He also noted that the fact that important world personalities, such as UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon, US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton as well as European and Arab foreign ministers are currently visiting the region, this "underlines the need for a ceasefire."

He asserted that it was Israel which was first attacked and that its responses aimed at "protecting the life and security of its citizens, which is the first concern of every government."amna

[02] PM cancels Qatar visit ahead of new Eurogroup meeting

AMNA / Prime Minister Antonis Samaras' visit to Qatar on Nov. 27 has been postponed due to the new Eurogroup meeting on Monday where the issue of the disbursement of the tranche to Greece will be discussed.amna

[03] Tsipras: PM 'absent' from negotiations

AMNA / Main opposition SYRIZA leader Alexis Tsipras on Wednesday accused Prime Minister Antonis Samaras of "absence" from the negotiations and a lack of positions, especially at a time when Europe is discussing the Greek problem, charging him of 'latching on to (German Chancellor Angela) Merkel's chariot", referring to Tuesday's inconclusive Eurogroup meeting, and reiterated his call for elections so that a government with a "fresh mandate from the people" will emerge.

Tsipras said that the EU is face-to-face with its dead-end choices, adding that the "road of the Memorandums has proved destructive for Europe itself, and painful for the peoples".

"They are searching agonisingly for ways to render the debt sustainable," he said, adding that it is common knowledge that not even the disbursement of the outstanding tranche of the EU/IMF bailout loan will ensure the sustainability of the debt.

Tsipras said that SYRIZA had predicted these developments from the outset, and had put forward the issue of a freeze of the debt but had been ridiculed, whereas now this very same proposal was discussed at the Eurogroup.amna

[04] 'Easy visas' for property, business investments in Greece

AMNA / Non-EU citizens who invest more than 300,000 euros in real estate in Greece will be given five-year visas for the country, while entrepreneurs who invest more than 100,000 euros for business purposes in Greece can secure 10-year residency permits for their executives to enable them to work in the country, according to a draft law to be unveiled by the development and competitiveness ministry in the coming days, and aimed at facilitating strategic investments in Greece.

Ministry sources told AMNA that the 'easy visa' will apply to non-EU citizens, and the members of their family, that acquire residences in Greece worth over 300,000 euros, and the purchase concerns a single owner.

The five-year visa will not count as time required for the acquisition of Greek citizenship and does not allow the holder to work in Greece, while it will have to be renewed every five years for the duration of the proprietorship of the property.

Market sources opine that the incentive will substantially help to rekindle the real estate market, particularly with Russian investment capital.

Also in the context of attracting investments to Greece, the finance ministry is mulling tax incentives for non-residents wishing to invest their incomes in the country, similar to an arrangement under British law.amna
