[02] Dep. Sports Minister on IOC proposal to abolish wrestling from 2020 Olympic Games

Deputy Minister of Sports Yannis Ioannidis, in a letter on Thursday to International Olympic Committee (IOC) President Jacques Rogge regarding the International Olympic Executive Board's proposal to abolish the Wrestling event from the 2020 Olympic Games programme, expressed the Greek people's feelings on and respect for the history of wrestling, requesting the continuation of the wrestling event in the Olympic Games.

In his letter, Ioannidis stressed that wrestling is closely connected with Greece and the Ancient Olympic Games, underlining that the history, the tradition and the social consensus that characterize it should not be sacrificed on the altar of ratings, the media and commercialization.

[03] Parliament vote opens way to lease of state-owned islets

AMNA--Parliament on Thursday passed an amendment allowing the lease of Greece's state-owned islets with 166 votes in favour, in a roll-call vote requested by main opposition Coalition of the Radical Left (SYRIZA-EKM). Under the amendment, such islets cannot be sold but only leased, provided the lease is approved by the national defence ministry, the citizen protection and public order ministry and the general staffs of all three branches of the Armed Forces.

Of the 252 MPs that cast their vote, there were 84 'no' votes from main opposition SYRIZA MPs, Golden Dawn (Chryssi Avgi) and Communist Party of Greece (KKE) MPs, and five of the nine Independent Greeks party MPs that took part in the vote. PASOK MP Apostolos Kaklamanis and independent MP Thodoros Parastatidis abstained. amna

The amendment tabled by National Defence Minister Panos Panagiotopoulos was introduced to quell concerns that the state ownership of islets, especially those in border areas, could be transferred to individuals.amna

Panagiotopoulos clarified that the changes in the wording of the measures were made so that there were no margins for "either unintentional misunderstandings or deliberate distortions," following SYRIZA's claims of "an attempt to sell off thousands of state-owned islets".
