[01] Temporary court rulings to stay, justice minister says
ANA-MPA -- Temporary court rulings will remain as an institution but
steps will be taken to prevent their excessive use, Justice Minister
Antonis Roupakiotis said in an interview appearing the Sunday issue of
the Greek newspaper "Eleftherotypia".
The minister said a measure to this effect will be tabled after the Easter
holiday, while he was strongly critical of those drawing up the draft
legislation he had refused to support the previous week, outlining the
reasons for his refusal. Among others, he noted that the wording would
have affected employees in the private sector.
He also strongly disagreed with the prospect of merging the justice
and public order ministries, saying that "the thought alone of such a
prospect is frightening."
[02] AGET Heracles request to lay off workers in Halkida plant is rejected
ANA-MPA -- Greek authorities on Wednesday rejected a request made
by AGET Heracles cement company – a subsidiary of Lafarge Group -
to lay off its 229 workers in its plant in Halkida, in western Evia,
essentially shutting down the unit.
The Labor Ministry's Supreme Labor Council turned down the Heracles Cement
request, with five votes in favor and one against, and recommended to
Labor Minister Yiannis Vroutsis not to approve the request.
The cement business said that the shutting down of its plant in Halkida
was necessitated by financial reasons because of a plunge in domestic
construction activity and the group's inability to sell its surplus
production to international markets due to low demand.
AGET Herakles has three cement plants in Greece - in Volos (mainland
Greece) and in Halkida and Milaki (both in Evia). It has quarries in
these areas and on Milos island.
