[01] Gov't slashes public spending, investment budget for 2014
ANA-MPA -- The Greek government significantly lowered the spending
ceiling in its regular budget and Public Investment Programme for
2014 to 48.8 billion euros, from 53.5 billion euros this year, and
set stricter rules on government ministry spending in the framework
of commitments included in a fiscal adjustment programme agreed with
the troika of lenders (European Union, European Central Bank and
International Monetary Fund).
"In order to ensure that the goals will be achieved, a strict
implementation of fiscal interventions within set timetables is
necessary. Ministries must develop whatever initiative is needed to
implement these interventions, to cover a fiscal gap for the period
2013-2014," Alternate Finance Minister Christos Staikouras said in a
ministerial decree.
The ministry set new, stricter caps on spending: 114 million euros-Greek
Parliament, 106mln-Administrative Reform ministry, 3.535 billion-Interior
ministry, 301mln-Foreign Affairs ministry, 2.385bln-Defense
ministry (583mln for defense programs), 4.483bln-Health ministry,
563.1mln-Justice ministry, 5.450bln-Education ministry, 665.4mln-Finance
ministry (excluding general state spending), 932.7mln-Agricultural
ministry, 430.2mln-Environment ministry, 12.7 bln-Labour ministry,
3.649bln-Development ministry, 318.7mln-Shipping and the Aegean ministry,
48.966mln-Tourism ministry and 1.273bln euros for regional authorities.
