ΑΝΑ-ΜΠΑ -- A young British man charged with fatally stabbing a fellow Briton during a brawl at Malia on Crete and a second suspect, both aged 19, will be testifying before the Iraklio prosecutor at noon on Monday, it was announced late Friday.

An Iraklio prosecutor on Wednesday charged Myles Litchmore-Dunbar, 19, with the murder of Tyrell Matthews-Burton, also 19, while the second young man to testify Monday allegedly told investigators that he may have stabbed Matthews-Burton accidentally.

The prosecutor heard testimonies in two batches, from 11 individuals in the victim's group of friends and from 5 (out of 8) friends of the main defendant, Litchmore-Dunbar, who were expected to be released as well. The releases were approved by the prosecutor and the investigator on the ground that all were charged with misdemeanours.

The young Britons were led to and from the courts under heavy security.

Court sources said that the testimony of two young women from the victim's circle on details of what led to Matthews-Burton's death played a decisive role in the testimony process.

British Ambassador to Greece John Kittmer on Friday visited Malia on Crete and met with consular and local authorities and the victim's family.

After meeting with the mayor and the chief of police and expressing condolences to the victim's family, Ambassador Kittner issued a written statement noting that "Greece is a friendly, hospitable and safe country."

He said he had come to Crete to support his colleagues at the consulate, local authorities and all involved in the case, and expressed his condolences to the family of the victim. Kittner lauded the consulate staff as "an exceptional consular team, which has good relations and works closely with all the local authorities in Malia and the tour operators" and said "the death of a young man in such circumstances is a great tragedy, which grieves us all."

The ambassador added that an annual information campaign at favourite British youth destinations in Greece - including Zakynthos, Crete, Corfu, Rhodes and Kos - was launched two months ago at Malia, and reiterated that "despite this tragic incident, the campaign message remains valid. We are saying to young tourists: you can have a good time and enjoy yourselves, while keeping safe and acting responsibly. All of us have to respect local laws and customs."

Last year, he noted, there were only 715 incidents of various types reported to British consulates in Greece, compared to the 2 million British tourists who visited the country.
