FM: Greece has warned EU it cannot handle more Syrian refugeesANA-MPA/ Greece "has not received a formal request for help" in Syria, Deputy Foreign Minister Dimitris Kourkoulas reiterated on Wednesday, adding that Greece's stance "aims at improving our role in the area and at serving Greek interests - of the Greek communities, the Orthodox church and Greek businesses."Speaking to Public Television, Kourkoulas said Greece's stance will not be influenced by Turkey's stance, and noted that "Greece's strategic interest is to stabilise the situation in Syria. A political solution is necessary." Speaking about the possibility of refugees, he referred to contacts Foreign Minister Evangelos Venizelos made with EU officials, adding that Greece has informed its European partners that it has very limited resources to handle war refugees. The numbers from Syria, with 100,000 victims and millions of refugees, constitute "the greatest humanitarian catastrophe of the 21st century," the minister said, and called the loss of lives "a crime against humanity". Greece should not, under any circumstances, get involved in the military intervention that the USA and its allies are preparing, neither directly nor indirectly. UN is the only international organisation that must examine objectively the reasons of this barbarous and unprecedented attack with chemicals against innocent people," it noted. It added, "The Syrian people are the only ones that must determine with peaceful and political means the immediate ending of the bloody civil war. The international community ought to support this one and only way". The main opposition party also warns the Greek government to "not allow our country to become part of an opportunistic war conflict that will have destructive consequences for all the people of the area, including the Greek people." [03] Deposits in Greek banks down in JulyANA-MPA/Deposits in Greek banks fell in July, for the second consecutive month, the Bank of Greece said on Wednesday.The central bank, in a report, said that deposits by enterprises and households fell by 288 million euros in July to 162.386 billion euros compared with June. Bank deposits began recovering in December 2012, with around 8.2 billion euros in new deposits recorded in the period from December 2012 to March 2013. However, this trend began changing in April, resulting to a decline in the last two months. Deposits in Greek banks fell to a low 150.5 billion euros in June 2012.
