  • [01] Limnos fossilised tree trunks protected as natural monuments

ANA-MPA -- Fossilised tree trunk remains in three locations of an area known as "the petrified forest" on the island of Limnos are officially protected as natural monuments by order of the Aegean District Secretary General Christiana Kalogirou.

The order identifies the locations in three areas of 2,440, 1,435 and 702 hectares, respectively, and was signed and sent to be published in the Government Gazette as a formal decision.

According to the decision, each fossilised trunk or segment and other fossilised plant parts - including roots, nuts and seeds - will be protected, while the "petrified forest" itself is called "a unique creation of nature and the country's heritage, of rare paleontological and geomorphological value."

The implementation of the decision and the management of the site as a natural monument were assigned to the Lesvos Forests Directorate - where Limnos belongs administratively - while the National History Museum of the Lesvos Petrified Forest is designated as scientific associate.

Work for the protection and promotion of the fossil forest can also carried out by the Limnos municipality, after special studies approved by the Lesvos Forests Directorate.

[02] Stress tests will boost confidence in Greek banks, according to Black Rock

The stress tests carried out by Black Rock on Greek banks will further strengthen the confidence of depositors and investors in the sector, Black Rock chairman and CEO Laurence Fink said in a meeting with Bank of Greece governor George Provopoulos on Thursday.

He noted that Bank of Greece has taken all necessary measures to restore the credibility of the Greek banking system, adding that "the results of the first test laid the foundations for the successful recapitalization of Greek banks, significantly boosting transparency."

Provopoulos said that despite the greater than expected deterioration of the macroeconomic situation in the time span of the last stress test, bank losses were within the range that was forecast by BlackRock, which proves that these tests were efficient. He also stressed that the restructuring of the banking sector is a cornerstone in the effort of Greece to exit the crisis and become a modern and competitive economy.
