New Democracy (ND) and PASOK pointed out the need for the bill to be passed and suggested some improvements. On their part, the opposition parties charged the government that the articles are neither socially just nor objective and do not protect the first home. Main opposition SYRIZA leader Alexis Tsipras accused the government of looting the Greek citizens' private wealth adding that they open the door to the home foreclosures and of giving the final blow to the Greek economy The draft bill concerns first-home foreclosures, as well as the protection of mortgage holders and establishes the Hellenic Investment Fund. Finance Minister Yannis Stournaras introduced technical improvements in the draft law. The changes relate to the controversial article 7 on outstanding debts of home owners. They include the provision that a fine will be levied six months after the payment deadline has passed, instead of the original two, and they clarify that these fines relate only to income tax debts, not to debts related to building permits and such. Payments for loans past deadline will include a fine and interest rates, as stipulated by the law currently in effect, the minister said.
