[01] Cephalonia shaken by new earthquake Monday morning, 5.7 Richter
ANA-MPA - Ten people were slightly injured during a new earthquake to
strike the Ionian island of Cephalonia at 5:08 a.m. on Monday morning,
measured at 5.7 on the Richter scale, according to the Geodynamic
Institute of the National Observatory of Athens.
The earthquake was felt in several cities on either side of the
Corinthhian Gulf and as far as Elia in the northwest Peloponnese.
Island residents were injured by falling objects abd were all released
by the hospital after first aid, Dionyssis Markatos, director of the
hospital in the town of Lixouri on the western coast of the island,
told private Mega TV.
Geodynamic Institute director Dimitra Sachpatzi said the earthquake came
from the same epicenter as the Jan. 26 earthquake of 5.8, 12 km from
Argostoli, also on the western coast. She also said that specialists
expect more earthquakes of similar strength over the next few days,
and did not rule out the possibility that the area of the massive 1953
earthquake would be reactivated.
Commenting on other measurements for the same tremor, like that of the
American Geodynamic Institute which measured an earthquake of 6.1 in
western Greece or the Euro, Sachpatzi said institutes do show slightly
different quake strengths and epicenters, but all come from the same area.
On Saturday, an aftershock of 5 on the Richter scale had shaken Cephalonia
at 18.33 Greek time, according to the Euro-Mediterranean Institute,
one of several to follow last Sunday's (Jan. 26).
