[02] DM Avramopoulos ends official visit to Moldova

ANA-MPA -- Defence Minister Dimitris Avramopoulos on Tuesday completed his two-day official visit to Moldova, during which he was received by Modovian President Nikolae Timofti.

Avramopoulos also met with Moldovan Prime Minister Iurie Leanca and the Moldovan Parliament President Igor Corman.

On Monday, the Greek Defence minister met with his Moldovian counterpart Vitalie Marinuta, and reiterated Greece's support to Moldova's European prospects and discussed issues regarding further development of the existing bilateral relations, including military cooperation.

In his statement, Marinuta noted that since 1995 members of the armed forces of his country have been trained in Greece adding that "military staff is preparing to depart for the KFOR mission in Kosovo under the command of a Moldovan Colonel who graduated from the Greek military academy "Evelpidon".

On his part, Avramopoulos recalled among others that in February of 1821, Alexandros Ypsilantis, while passing from Russia to Moldova, declared the beginning of the Greek War of Independence.

Finally, Avamopoulos invited his Moldovian counterpart to visit Greece as soon as possible.
