  • [01] Environment minister: International tendering on Greece's mineral resources soon

ANA-MPA - The Environment, Energy and Climate Change Minister Yiannis Maniatis announced on Friday that the Ministry will very soon launch international tenders on the research and exploitation of Greece's mineral wealth.

Maniatis, addressing a conference on mineral wealth, said the report of the relevant committee set for the recording of the 'mature' areas offered for immediate exploitation will be completed very soon and based on this report the tenders will open "in order to develop hidden values of tens of billions of euros in Greece's subsoil," as the minister said.

Moreover, a series of changes in the legislation are promoted aiming at the simplification of the quarries licencing and the modernisation of the mining code.

Greece does not have the luxury to relinquish any source of wealth and announced the interconnection of the Institute of Geology and Mineral Exploration (IGME) with the Universities as well as the reorientation of the Research and Technology General Secreteriat funds towards this direction.

The Greek Commissioner for Fisheries Maria Damanaki underlined EU's high dependence from the imported raw materials and noted the need for recycling and re-usage of materials, while underlining the importance of the development of the underwater mineral resources despite its high cost.
