[01] President Papoulias receives Greek-American students group
ANA-MPA - A group of students from the American Hellenic Institute
(AHI), headed by the centre's president Nick Larigakis, were received
by President of the Republic Karolos Papoulias at the presidential
mansion on Tuesday.
The president congratulated the students, who are of Greek descent, for
wanting to learn more about the country their parents and grandparents
set out from to create a new life, and invited them to ask questions
about national issues and Greek foreign policy.
"I believe that if the Greek language were as widespread as the English
language, Greek poetry would be dominant in the world, with hundreds of
poets," Papoulias said, adding about Greeks' outlook, "The Greek people
are sensitive not only towards our homeland, but towards others in the
world as well who are suffering."
The AHI president said the programmes aim is to "create future and
modern ambassadors of issues in the greater (geographic) area we have
been trying to promote in the United States for many years," and the
Institute wanted to highlight the important role of Greece and Cyprus
in the interests of America and the West.
Later Papoulias received a delegation of the Pancyprian Association of
Parents and Relatives of Undeclared Prisoners and Missing Persons, who
briefed him on the actions they are taking and issues they are facing
in trying to learn the fate of their family members.
