[01] Thessaloniki gears up for annual international fair
A number of protests and rallies have been scheduled for Friday and
Saturday in Thessaloniki on the occasion of Prime Minister Antonis
Samaras' visit to inaugurate the city's 79th International Fair (TIF).
The unions of police officers, fire brigade and coastguard personnel
have called on their members to participate in a demonstration on Friday
at 18.00. Teachers, placed under the availability scheme, will gather
in downtown Thessaloniki at 10.30 on Saturday and march towards the
"Ioannis Vellidis" Conference Center, where the opening ceremony will
take place and Prime Minister Samaras will deliver his address.
Private and public sector umbrella trade unions GSEE and ADEDY, the
Thessaloniki Labour Centre and the Thessaloniki Association of Public
Sector Employees have called for a rally on Saturday at 18.00.
Communist Party (KKE)-affiliated PAME labour organization on
Saturday afternoon will hold a separate protest, while associations of
non-parliamentary leftist parties, as well as, activists' groups against
the gold mining in Halkidiki will stage their own rallies.
Police has stepped up security measures bringing in forces from
other parts of the country to be deployed in central streets of the
city, as well as, outside the Macedonia-Thrace Ministry and the TIF
venue. Moreover, a police helicopter will be flying over the city during
the protests, while traffic police will close Thessaloniki's main streets
to traffic.
