The unions of police officers, fire brigade and coastguard personnel have called on their members to participate in a demonstration on Friday at 18.00. Teachers, placed under the availability scheme, will gather in downtown Thessaloniki at 10.30 on Saturday and march towards the "Ioannis Vellidis" Conference Center, where the opening ceremony will take place and Prime Minister Samaras will deliver his address.

Private and public sector umbrella trade unions GSEE and ADEDY, the Thessaloniki Labour Centre and the Thessaloniki Association of Public Sector Employees have called for a rally on Saturday at 18.00.

Communist Party (KKE)-affiliated PAME labour organization on Saturday afternoon will hold a separate protest, while associations of non-parliamentary leftist parties, as well as, activists' groups against the gold mining in Halkidiki will stage their own rallies.

Police has stepped up security measures bringing in forces from other parts of the country to be deployed in central streets of the city, as well as, outside the Macedonia-Thrace Ministry and the TIF venue.
