  • [01] Parliament ratifies antiracism bill after roll call vote on three articles

ANA/MPA---Parliament, in its third summer session, ratified an antiracism bill on Tuesday night after extreme-right Golden Dawn (Chryssi Avgi) called for a roll call vote on three of its articles.

The first article related to the public incitement of racist violence or hate crimes. It passed with the votes of 58 deputies from New Democracy, PASOK and DIMAR as well as independent deputies.

The second article related to the denial of genocide with malicious intent, with main opposition Radical Left Coalition (SYRIZA) also calling for a roll call vote. The same parties as above, with 54 deputies, voted "yea", and 42 "nay".

Lastly, the third article relates to prosecution of the above-mentioned acts, even if they perpetrate them on internet platforms from abroad. This was passed by 60 deputies, of the same parties as the first one, with the addition of Independent Greeks (ANEL).

[02] Hospital staff holds protest over new hospital payments scheme

ANA/MPA---The federation of hospital doctor union OENGE on Wednesday will go on a work stoppage from 12 am until the end of theis shift to protest against a draft law setting up a new hospital payments agency, the Hospital Payment Systems Company SA.

Doctors have also organised a protest rally outside Parliament at 12:30 along with the Athens-Piraeus Hospital Doctors Union (EINAP) and the hospital staff union federation POEDHN.

OENGE said that the creation of the new company marked the state's complete withdrawal from funding the public health system and dismissed the modifications made by the Health minister as immaterial, finding that "they do not change the essence of the drastic repercussions for patients, hospitals and doctors."

[03] One in three houses non-residential in Greece, report

ANA-MPA - Almost one in three houses in Greece were non-residential in 2011, a report by Hellenic Statistical Authority (ELSTAT) said on Tuesday. The statistics service, in the report, said that the number of houses in Greece totalled 6,384,353 in 2011, of which 6,371,901 were conventional houses (99.8 pct) and 12,452 were non-conventional houses (0.2 pct).

From the total 6,371,901 houses, 4,122,088 (64.7 pct) were residential and 2,249,813 (35.3 pct) were vacant – also because of the crisis that hit the Greek economy. Among vacant houses, 729,964 (11.5 pct) were holiday homes, 621,881 (9.8 pct) were secondary homes, 453,901 (7.1 pct) were offered for rent, 355,071 (5.6 pct) were vacant for other reasons and 88,996 (1.4 pct) were offered for sale.

The top three regions of the country with the most non-residential houses were Attica (609,058), Central Macedonia (360,990) and the Peloponnese (198,386).

Portugal (31.9 pct), Malta (31.8 pct), Bulgaria (31.4 pct) and Cyprus (31.1 pct) also recorded high rates in vacant houses in the European Union, while Poland (2.5 pct), the UK (3.6 pct) and Luxembourg (7.2 pct) recorded the lowest rates.

The report said that 22.6 pct of conventional houses in Greece were built in the 1971-1980 period, while 44.7 pct of conventional houses were in flats and 96.1 pct in urban centres.

[04] First axonometric representation of ancient Amphipolis tomb

ANA-MPA--The archaeological excavations at Kasta tumulus in Amphipolis continue along with the horizontal removal of the soil throughout the area between the second diaphragmatic wall with the caryatids and the third wall.

Meanwhile, the first axonometric representation of the tomb was presented by Culture Ministry's architect Mihalis Lefantzis. The representation shows the two diaphragmatic walls with the sphinxes and the caryatids. Support and maintenance works continue along with the documentation of the archaeological finds and works with digital and conventional means.
