ANA-MPA - The municipality of Acharnes, north of Athens, has been placed under a state of emergency by the Secretary General of Civil Protection, at the Public Order and Citizen Protection ministry, Serafim Tsokas, it was announced Sunday.

The move was considered necessary in order to facilitate efforts to restore damage incurred by torrential rain in the greater Athens area on Friday, especially at homes, stores and streets that were flooded or in the case of cars, swept away. The municipality was among those hardest hit, with its commercial centre sustaining great loss in inventory.

Acharnes Mayor Yiannis Kassavos and Attica regional director Rena Dourou applied for the order, which shall remain in effect until January 26, 2015.

Meanwhile, damage is still being assessed and a list will be passed on to the government, which is releasing by order of Prime Minister Antonis Samaras, emergency funding as of Monday.
