  • [01] SYRIZA calls for mass participation in nationwide general strike

ANA - MPA -- Main opposition Radical Left Coalition (SYRIZA) on Tuesday called for mass participation in a nationwide general strike on Thursday, November 27 under the slogan "it is either us or them", noting that "the catastrophic policy of the government will not stop, unless we stop it".

SYRIZA accused the government that "while a short while ago it was talking about the country's exit from the memorandum in an effort to deceive the Greek people, now it prepares for new tough measures". According to SYRIZA, while 44 pct of the population is faced with poverty based on ILO figures, 1.3 million people are unemployed for more than an year and the overwhelming majority is deeply concerned about the future, the government in the context of the fiasco-negotiation with the troika plans to deliver a 'coup de grace' to what's left of labour and social insurance rights, with new pension cuts that will lead pensioners to indigence.

The government prepares to destroy public education and the public health system, abolish the right to strike and trade union action, continue the layoffs in the public sector and allow mass layoffs in the private sector, SYRIZA underlined.

The budget it has tabled cuts social spending even more, increases taxes, destroys any economic growth prospect and promotes new privatisations to the detriment of public property and the interests of the Greek people, a SYRIZA announcement noted.

[02] Cyprus, Egypt and Greece trilateral meeting on energy issues

ANA/MPA---The trilateral meeting of Cyprus, Egypt and Greece, which will take place in Nicosia on Tuesday, is rather important for energy cooperation in the Eastern Mediterranean area.

The three ministers will discuss the next steps after the agreement of the tripartite meeting and likely the possibility of further cooperation.

Discussions between Cypriot Energy Minister George Lakkotrypis and Egypt's Minister of Petroleum Sherif Ismail, whose country is interested in buying gas from Cyprus, are also considered crucial.

[03] Fraport-Slentel offer highest bid for Greek regional airports

ANA - MPA -- German airport operator Fraport AG along with Greek energy group Copelouzos was named the preferred bidder to lease and operate 14 regional airports, the country's privatisation agency said on Tuesday.

Fraport and Slentel, a unit of Copelouzos group, offered 1.23 billion euros to bid for the operation of airport terminals at some of Greece's most popular tourist islands such as Rhodes, Corfu, Mykonos and Santorini. The consortium also offered 22.9 million euros as a guaranteed annual payable lease, which will be adjusted annually for inflation.

The amount offered by the consortium was much higher than both the independent evaluation and the next best offer.

Argentina's holding company CASA (Corporation America) with Greek engineering firm Metka, and France's Vinci Airports SAS with Greek contractor AKTOR were the other two bidders whose financial offers were unsealed on Tuesday.

"The high bids offered by investors show the positive outlook for the Greek economy and tourism and are a proof that there are important international companies that are committing to a long-term investment in Greece," the chief executive officer of Greece's privatisation agency HRADF, Paschalis Bouchoris, told ANA-MPA.
