  • [01] Economy Minister Stathakis to CNN: We are trying to find the most logical solution for all

ANA/MPA---"We do not want to go back to the state of affairs that existed prior to the crisis. Greece had many problems and we are not blackmailing the eurozone," Economy Minister George Stathakis said in an interview to CNN late Tuesday.

"We are trying to find the most logical solution for both sides, a solution that will minimise the losses for the European tax payers," he said among others.

In terms of structural reforms, he made a special reference to the reforms in taxation and public administration and estimated that the Greek government will very soon reach an agreement with its EU partners.

Moreover, he said that he supports the proposal for bonds with growth clause, noting that "growth is the new government's first priority." He also noted that the Europeans of the north have realised that the Greek citizens have many losses as a result of the austerity. "The only mandate we have is get Greece back to work and get the condition of the Greek households, 1/3 of which are below the poverty line, to a better state of affairs.

[02] ANEL on the reactions to the finance minister's statements

ANA - MPA -- The government's goal is to take the burden of a huge non-manageable debt off the shoulders of the Greek people, Marina Chrissoveloni, spokeswoman for Independent Greeks (ANEL), the junior partner in the SYRIZA-led coalition government, said on Tuesday.

Referring to the reactions to the statements made by Finance Minister Yanis Varoufakis on the Greek debt, she said that the Greek people "relegated to the opposition in Parliament those who maintained that the public debt is manageable and sustainable," adding that "the national-purpose government seeks to win a positive result for the country without mocking the Greeks."

Chryssoveloni urged those "who are concerned today about the terminology of the negotiation" to ask former prime minister Antonis Samaras "what he meant when he was saying that Greece will receive 'debt assistance' in the form of new loans."

[03] Varoufakis to meet ECB's Draghi on Wednesday, Schaeuble on Thursday

ROME (ANA-MPA/ Th. Andreadis) Emerging from a meeting with Italian Economy and Finances Minister Pier Carlo Padoan on Tuesday, Greek Finance Minister Yanis Varoufakis described the meeting as "extremely useful" in statements to reporters.

He said the two sides had a discussed a 'road map' for the next few years and issues raised during his talks in Paris and London, which must be examined during his meeting on Wednesday with European Central Bank President Mario Draghi and on Thursday when he meets his German counterpart Wolfgang Schaeuble.

"We will use whatever tools are necessary in order to reduce the debt and make the economy sustainable, so as to stop the self-reinforcing crisis," he said. According to the minister, what mattered was the essence and not the name that will be given to the solution for reducing the debt and returning to growth, without creating further malignancies. He ended by expressing confidence that a solution will be found.
