  • [01] Greek request a starting point for further discussions, German gov't spokesperson says

ANA/MPA---The Greek government's request for an extension of the economic aid "is not yet sufficient," but must be a starting point for further discussions, a spokesperson of German Chancellor Angela Merkel said on Friday, implying an agreement with Athens may be reached.

"According to the German government (the Greek request) is not yet sufficient," the government spokesperson Christiane Wirtz said during a briefing, adding that "it is considered a starting point for other discussions."

[02] US government urges European leaders and Greece to make mutual compromises

ANA/MPA---The US government urged the European leaders and the Greek government to proceed with mutual compromises during the negotiations on the extension of the loan agreement, while at the same time putting pressure to Europe and Athens in order to reach an agreement on Greece's financing.

The US also warned against the "return of uncertainty" in the eurozone in case of failure, according to a senior official of the US Treasury.

"It is important for Europe and the global economy to reach an agreement," the official underlined adding that both sides must make mutual "compromises" in order to achieve that.

The Europeans have the ability to deal with that challenges, he reassured.

"If the negotiations collapse, Greece will feel immediately the economic impact," and the eurozone will experience "the return of uncertainty, as well as the economy in its entirety."

The US Treasury Secretary Jack Lew had telephone conversations with senior European officials on Friday, the official said

[03] Extraordinary Eurogroup meeting to start at 17:30

ANA-MPA/The Eurogroup meeting on Friday has been rescheduled for 17:30 (Athens time), Eurogroup president Jeroen Dijsselbloem said in a message posted on Twitter.

According to sources, the delay is due to bilateral deliberations that will precede the meeting aiming at a better preparation.

The extraordinary Eurogroup meeting that will examine Greece's request for extension of the loan agreement will start in Brussels with the presence of International Monetary Fund (IMF) managing director Christine Lagarde.

Diplomatic sources from Brussels said to ANA-MPA that there were signs of progress on the Greek request after the conclusion of Thursday's EuroWorking Group meeting. They also said that the eurozone's Finance Ministers will move on the direction of a solution that appears to be possible to be accepted by the majority of the member states of the eurozone. "We are giving a tough battle to achieve a mutally beneficial solution and at the same time respect the people's mandate," said government spokesman Gavriil Sakellaridis on Friday.
