ANA-MPA - A cabinet meeting chaired by Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras at Parliament on the economy concluded on Thursday night. The meeting, which lasted approximately five hours, focused on the latest developments in the ongoing negotiations between Greece and its creditors, following the meeting of the EuroWorking Group (EWG) on Wednesday.

Ministers were also expected to discuss the efforts to achieve an agreement with Greece's creditors in the next few days, the measures the government is expected to take, the domestic political situation and issues relating to the improvement of the image of the government.

Tsipras appeared confident that Greece was close to an acceptable solution on an interim agreement with its creditors very soon, sources said, speaking the premier's statements to the cabinet.

"I am optimistic that we are close to an agreement that will move within the framework of the popular mandate we received and which will be defined by the 'red' lines we have set," Tsipras said, while briefing the cabinet on the progress of the negotiations.

The same sources said the prime minister fully analysed the developments in the talks and where things currently stand. The government wants an agreement by May 11 or even earlier, they said, while leaving open the possibility that Athens will request an emergency meeting of the Eurogroup.

Sources also added that a draft omnibus bill would not be discussed during Thursday's cabinet, as talks in Brussels were still under way.
