  • [01] Citizens' majority approves gov't handlings; 89 pct against early elections, says opinion poll

ANA/MPA---Citizens' majority said that the government should not retreat in the negotiations with Greece's lenders while 54 percent approve government's handlings on the negotiation for the debt, according to an opinion poll conducted by Public Issue for Avghi newspaper.

Moreover, according to the poll results 89 percent of the respondents said there is no need for general elections.

The citizens' concern for the economy is clearly reflected provided that 55 percent of those asked believe that their bank deposits are not very secure in Greece.

Regarding their expectations over the condition of the economy, 48 percent said it will get worse, 27 percent that it will remain the same and 25 percent that it will get better.

Regarding the media stance towards the government, the citizens said that 49 percent of the media is against the government, 28 percent that is friendly and 4 percent did not answer.

[02] German stance on war reparations is scandalous, German economist Rainer Thiem says

ANA/MPA---The German stance on war reparations is scandalous and does not fit in a just state, said German economist Rainer Thiem who took the initiative through the web platform change.org to collect signatures for the German war reparations to Greece.

In an open letter to German Chancellor Angela Merkel, he said that the issue has not been settled nor written-off and Germany needs to pay the debt so that both people are set free from the burdens of the past.

In an interview with ANA-MPA, he said he is in favour of the political and judicial claim of war reparations and supports the decision of the Greek government.

He also described those who accused Greece of "blackmailing" its partners as "cynical" and "deceitful."

Regarding the economic crisis, he said that Greece serves as a guinea pig that will determine the type of Europe that will be handed over to the next generations. He noted that the political and economic elites in Germany and Europe were outraged against the Greeks who deposed the vested parties and voted for the left.

The full interview is available for subscribers at ANA-MPA website.

[03] Greek car market positively reacts to car taxation plans

ANA/MPA---Greek car market officials positively reacted to a Finance ministry plan to change car taxation although officials said the market will wait for the ministry's final proposals to judge the result. Market officials said a plan to link car taxation to the car's pre-tax retail price, instead to its power under the current system, is a fair measure, while they positively reacted to plans to change current living standard criteria for the use of cars -considered in some cases to be excessive- and to plans to offer exemptions to circulation fees for cars using the latest environmental friendly technology and fuel.

The Finance ministry plan envisages linking registration fees with pre-tax retail price of a car, which means higher registration fees for expensive cars and lower fees for cheaper cars. Another ministry plan to introduce an environment fee for older technology cars -aged more than 20 years- is expected to have a positive impact on the car market as consumers will seek to replace their cars with new, modern technology cars.

[04] Alt. Tourism Minister: Special emphasis on sea tourism

ANA/MPA---The development of sea tourism is a challenge for Greece and can become the driver of the Greek economy, Alternate Tourism Minister Elena Kountoura on Tuesday said in her address to "Posidonia" event, held at the Athens Concert Hall.

Kountoura said that the ministry is in open dialogue with the sector's entities towards Greece's establishment as top cruise destination.

In Europe, said Kountoura, sea tourism's turnover is approximately 40 billion euros and the common belief is that Greece offers comparative advantages on the claim of part of this market.

The minister underlined that among her ministry's targets is the extension of the tourist season adding that already top tourist operators have extended the travel season to Greece from 180 to 215 days. Moreover, she referred to the coding of the tourism legislation as well as to the infrastructure upgrading efforts that modernise the country's tourism product.
