  • [01] ND leader confident party leadership election will run smoothly on Sunday

Main opposition New Democracy (ND) interim leader Yiannis Plakiotakis on Friday expressed his certainty that an election for new party leader on Sunday will be successful, while he urged members and supporters of the party to vote.

The party was forced to cancel its first elections on Nov. 22 due to major technical problems, which generated a firestorm of criticism.

The candidates for ND's leadership are Vangelis Meimarakis, Adonis Georgiadis, Kyriakos Mitsotakis and Apostolos Tzitzikostas.

[02] Roman Rotunda in Thessaloniki reopens as a visiting monument after restoration

The grand Rotunda of Thessaloniki, also known as the Church of Agios Georgios, reopened its doors on Friday with a concert to mark the much-awaited occasion, after a year of restoration works.

The building, included on the Unesco World Heritage List since 1988, is one of the most important Roman monuments in the city and stands next to the Arch of Galerius. This cylindrical structure was commissioned by Roman Emperor Galerius in 306 AD, who intended it to be his grave. Through its turbulent history, it served first as a Roman mausoleum, then as a Christian church and during the Ottoman era, as a mosque.

From 1920 and until the end of WWII, the Rotunda housed the city's archaeological treasures by serving as a museum. In 1978 it suffered damage from an earthquake and was covered in scaffolding until last year, when the archaeological service announced it would close for full a restoration.

[03] Mahmoud Abbas to visit Athens next week

Palestinian Authority president Mahmoud Abbas will make a three-day visit to Greece, beginning on Sunday, during which he will meet with Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras and address a Parliament session.

On Monday, Abbas will hold a meeting with Greek President Prokopis Pavlopoulos, which will be followed by a meeting with Tsipras at the Maximos Mansion, as well as a broader meeting between delegations.

Tsipras and Abbas will then hold a joint press conference.
