  • [01] Bogomolov's postmodern 'Karamazovs' reshape Dostoyevsky's classic on Jan. 3-6

Angry, postmodern, politically groundbreaking - and unsuitable for minors – "The Karamazovs" of the Chekhov Moscow Art Theater arrives at the Onassis Cultural Centers in Athens at the start of the new year (Jan. 3-6).

The five-hour performance of Moscow's historic theatre travels for the first time outside the Russian borders, bringing Fyodor Dostoyevsky's masterpiece "The Brothers Karamazov" from 19th century Russia and the abolition of serfdom into the modern reality of Russian capitalism.

The hotly debated director Konstantin Bogomolov places his heroes in a hi-tech environment of corporate offices with marble fittings resembling a mausoleum, VIP rooms and solariums where grotesque figures parade, while the play is accompanied by music ranging from Russian pop to ballads by Freddie Mercury and Nick Cave.

[02] One firefighter injured in blaze on small islet near Chios

One fireman was injured when a large blaze broke out on a tiny islet near the island of Chios in the eastern Aegean on Sunday, after a fire lit up by migrants and refugees who had disembarked from a boat got out of control due to the strong winds blowing in the area.

Authorities believe refugees made the fire to warm up or to be located and rescued by the coast guard.

Fire department and military officials which arrived on the islet of Panagia, part of the Oinousses cluster of barren islands, battled for hours with the flames until they were able to put them out after 22.00. Authorities estimate about 3.6 acres of grassland were burned.

[03] Athenians defy crisis to shop on last Sunday of 2015

Many Athenians took advantage of the good weather and open stores on the last Sunday of the year to visit major commercial streets in the city and do some last minute shopping, shop owners said.

"Work is more than satisfactory so far," businessman George Zoulovits who owns jewelry stores with the same name told ANA – MPA. "There are a lot of people and they are not just looking at shop windows, but they go into the stores and shop. The same applies to our own store here in Ermou, where traffic and turnover have quite increased. Of course, shopping is less than in other times, but considering the difficult economic situation, we must not complain," he added.

Stores will stay open today until 18.00 (local).

[04] Weather to worsen in Greece from New Year's Eve

Temperatures are expected to drop during the last two days of the year in Greece, the National Weather Service announced on Sunday, raising hopes some mountainous and northern regions might enjoy some snow.

Greece has experienced an exceptionally mild winter so far, with clear blue skies and temperatures reaching 15 degrees during the day, including Christmas day.

Clouds and rain are expected on Wednesday (Dec. 30) throughout Greece while snow is forecast for the mountainous area in central and northern parts of the country. Winds will reach 7 on the Beaufort scale and temperatures will drop as low as 2 degrees Celcius causing frost in central and northern regions during the night and early in the morning.

On New Year's Eve, sleet is forecast for many regions of the country. Mountainous arrears as well as in the lowlands of central and northern Greece will see snow with wind velocity reaching 7 on the Beaufort scale. Temperatures will drop to -1 in many regions with frost forming during the night and early in the morning.

Temperatures will drop another degree on New Year's day with sleet, rain and clouds expected for most of the country. Winds will reach 5 on the Beaufort scale in the west and 7 in the east.
