[01] Kos eyes referendum on issue of hotspot on isle
The city council of the island of Kos decided late Monday to hold a
referendum in order to query local residents' opinion on the construction
of a refugee / migrant "hotspot" on the Dodecanese island.
During a council meeting, Kos Mayor Giorgos Kyritsis stated: "Provided
that the government's officials and elected MPs believe that a majority
of the population supports the construction of a hotspot, I gave orders
to the municipality's general director to examine the procedures so that
a local referendum is held, allowing citizens to decide."
According to reports, some 7,000 local residents have signed a petition
against the construction of such a center on the island.
