  • [01] Mitsotakis outlines party's basic principles; says ND rapidly preparing to govern

Main opposition New Democracy (ND) leader Kyriakos Mitsotakis on Friday outlined the basic principles and organizational structure for his party.

Mitsotakis set out five key priorities: meritocracy, solidarity, excellence, credibility and growth, which he said are the core of the plan for restructuring the party.

"I pledged to make New Democracy a party that will listen to the society's needs and will draft its policies in order to cover the needs of the many and not the few. I pledged to proceed with the expansion of New Democracy," Mitsotakis stated, and added that the program will be built on two principles: freedom and solidarity.

At the same time he referred to a approach based on three components -- investments, low taxes and jobs -- to jumpstart growth in the recession-plagued country, in tandem with a modern social policy that includes a minimum guaranteed income to reduce poverty. The ND leader also stressed a special emphasis on education, restructuring public administration and the improvement of Greece's credibility abroad.

"New Democracy is rapidly preparing itself for the country's governance, building a trustworthy relationship with the citizens," Mitsotakis said, adding that proposals included in the party program will be realistic and easily implemented.

"We make an opening towards society. Apart from the valuable party members we are looking for, we are looking for new people and new ideas. We want to renew New Democracy."

[02] Greek economy to grow by 2.7% in 2017 if reforms implemented, Moscovici says‏

The European Commission forecasts that the Greek economy will return to growth in the second half of the year and could grow by 2.7 pct in 2017 on the condition that the country implements vital reforms agreed in a bailout programme, EU Commissioner for Economic Affairs Pierre Moscovici said in video address shown at a conference in Greece on Friday.

In his message, Moscovici said implementation of the reforms would lay the groundwork for a return of confidence, allowing an expected lifting of capital controls in the country.

Referring to the course of implementation of the economic adjustment programme, the Commissioner stressed that the steps made since August "are encouraging and now we can turn our attention to completing the first review of the programme, which must be completed soon to restore confidence. Greece must promote certainty – political, legal, administrative. Because uncertainty gives birth to more uncertainty."

He address was shown at the Delphi Economic Forum, held in the municipality that includes the iconic archaeological site in central mountainous Greece.
