  • [01] Gov't spokeswoman on Turkish army helicopter's landing at Alexandroupolis airport

    AMNA/Government spokeswoman Olga Gerovassili in a statement on Saturday on the landing of a Turkish military helicopter at Alexandroupolis airport said "On Saturday morning a Turkish military helicopter send an SOS while entering the Greek airspace and asked permission for emergency landing.

    The Greek General staff immediately contacted the political authority and Defence Minister Panos Kammenos with Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras. Two Greek airforce aircrafts were ordered to take off and accompany the helicopter until its safe landing at Alexandroupolis airport.

    The Greek police arrested the 8 passengers of the helicopter who stated that they will seek political asylum in Greece. The Greek government has informed the Turkish authorities in order the helicopter to be returned as soon as possible to Turkey.

    Regarding the helicopter passengers, the Greek government will follow the relevant procedures according to the International Law, however, the fact that in Turkey the suspects are facing charges for violating the constitutional legality and attempt to dismantle the democracy will be taken under very serious consideration.

    [02] FM Kotzias has phone contact with Turkish FM Çavuşoğlu; expresses Greece's support

    "Foreign Minister Nikos Kotzias on Saturday talked on the phone with his Turkish counterpart, Mevlüt Çavuşoğlu, whom he told that Greece condemns any coup attempt and supports the Turkish people's struggle for democracy and defence of the constitutional order in Turkey", said a Greek Foreign Ministry announcement.

    Moreover, Kotzias had a phone contact with his Russian counterpart Sergey Lavrov as well as with EU High Representative of Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Federica Mongherini as well as with Italian Foreign Minister Paolo Gentiloni.

    [03] Stores to open on Sunday

    The shops will be open on Sunday 17 July from 11:00 to 18:00 while the big stores will remain open until 20:00.

    Shops and stores are allowed to open on the first Sunday of the summer sales period that started on July 11 and will end on August 31.
