  • [01] About 90 pct of property owners will pay less or same tax as in 2015, says finance ministry

About 90 percent of property owners (about 6.4 million) who pay the single property tax known as ENFIA will pay less, the same or almost the same tax as last year, the finance ministry said on Friday.

"The overall ENFIA bill for 2016 will range in the same level as last year and reports that claim the overall ENFIA will rise are not true," the ministry said in a press release. "What does correspond to the truth is the fact that this year's ENFIA there's a redistribution of burdens from the small to the large assets," it added.

[02] Ancient olive branch wreath to make new appearance in Rio ceremony

An olive branch wreath, known as "kotinos", made from the branches of the monumental olive tree of Vouves in Crete, the oldest olive tree in the world, will make its fourth public appearance on Friday night with the Greek Olympic team, during the opening ceremony of the Rio Olympics.

The olive wreath has previously travelled to Athens, Beijing and London.

"[Kotinos] is a strong symbolic message for ethos and fair play. We send from Greece the message of peace and friendship between peoples which are especially relevant in these days," mayor of Platania, Yiannis Malandrakis, told ANA-MPA, whose municipality borders with Vouves village where the ancient olive tree stands.

"Olympic champions were crowned with olive branch wreaths in antiquity, while at the 2004 Athens Olympics, the wreaths given to the winners were from the branches of the olive tree in Vouves."

[03] Coup, Escobar, Olympic Games: The most popular entries in Greek Wikipedia in July

The word "coup", referring to the attempted coup in Turkey last month, was by far the most searched word in the Greek Wikipedia in July with 3,523 readings in average per day, according to data.

It was followed by the name Pablo Escobar – possibly because of a popular TV series showing in Greece – and the words Olympic Games with 2,270 and 1,162 readings per day respectively.

The top 10 was completed with the words: Greece, Cristiano Ronaldo, Aliki Vougiouklaki (popular actress from the 60's), catalog of Greek TV series, Turkey, European Football Championship 2016 and European Football Championship (generally).

In the English Wikipedia, the most popular words in July were: Hillary Clinton, Donald Trump and members of their families, as well as Pokemon Go (in the Greek Wikipedia, Pokemon Go was at 68).
