  • [01] A new extrajudicial mechanism for settlement of debts is on track, Economy Min Stathakis says

Economy Minister Giorgos Stathakis in an interview with the Athens - Macedonian News Agency on Sunday announced a series of actions to boost entrepreneurship in Greece, attracting new investments and completing the institutional framework for the settlement of bad business loans as well as the debts of entrepreneurs and self-employed in the public and social security funds.

On non-performing loans, he said that "we are at the final stage of completing the institutional framework for a new extrajudicial mechanism for the settlement of businesses and self-employed debts, based on objective, transparent and acceptable criteria."

Regarding market liquidity, Stathakis said that 3.5 billion euros from the state debt to the private sector will have been paid by the end of the year and another 2 billion euros in 2017.

As regards the NSRF, a 50 percent of the programmes will have been activated by the end of September along with actions of total budget of 370 million euros for business partnerships with research institutes to promote investment in research and innovation.

On the implementation of the prior actions that will unlock the disbursement of the 2.8 billion euro loan sub-tranche, Stathakis noted that all issues related to the Economy Ministry will be fully 'covered.'

[02] Only growth is not enough to exit the crisis, gov't VP Dragasakis says

The economy gets on recovery track, which in itself is not sufficient for a rapid reduction in unemployment and meeting the enormous backlog in health needs, social protection and social state, government vice president Ioannis Dragasakis said in an interview with newspaper Kefaleo.

"We first have to ensure the recovery that the current 'system' can give us, then activate the 'accelerators,' that is the factors that will speed up the recovery and lead to fair and sustainable growth. These factors are the debt settlement, investments (productive and long-term) and boosting domestic public and private investment activity, he explained.

Dragasakis left open the possibility of government reshuffle and spoke of a quality step that the government should take on how the country is governed and the overall functioning of the political system."

[03] Tsipras to present steps to economic recovery and growth in TIF, gov't spokeswoman says

Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras will present the next steps of the government to economic recovery and real growth in the Thessaloniki International Fair (TIF), government spokeswoman Olga Gerovassili said in an interview with the Athens-Macedonian News Agency on Sunday.

The main points will be the exit from the surveillance programme and the production reconstruction, she stressed.

Gerovassili accused the leader of main opposition New Democracy Kyriakos Mitsotakis of presenting an "agreement of truth" and promising things that will never be implemented.

On the contrary, she said the current government has implemented everything promised in the two previous international fairs.

[04] The contingent mechanism has already been enforced, ND's Staikouras says

The program review of September will be difficult, but the SYRIZA-ANEL government votes everything in order to remain in power, main opposition New Democracy (ND) coordinator of Economic Affairs Christos Staikouras said in an interview with the Athens-Macedonian News Agency adding that delays in meeting the prior actions have already been recorded.

Referring to the contingent mechanism, he said that it has already been enforced as the government is keeping expenses at low levels in order to show that it meets the fiscal targets.

On New Democracy's proposal to be presented in Thessaloniki International Fair (TIF), he said that it will be "a realistically documented and costed roadmap" aimed at social development, jobs and social cohesion.

Staikouras did not rule out the possibility of early elections, as he considers that the government will have "to deal with its lies and managerial inadequacy" in autumn.
