  • [01] Obama pays tribute to Ecumenical Patriarch on 25th anniversary of his election

U.S. President Barack Obama sent a congratulatory message to the Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew who is marking the 25th anniversary of his election to his post. Bartholomew presided on Saturday over a service at the Patriarchal Church of St. George at Phanar in Istanbul to mark the event, which was attended by Deputy Foreign Minister Yiannis Amanatidis.

"Guided by the teachings of his faith, His All-Holiness, Bartholomew, has long been a pillar of wisdom and enlightenment for people around the world. His work – whether promoting peace and reconciliation, standing for human rights and freedoms, supporting refugees, or encouraging us to be stewards of the one planet we share – has helped transcend divides that have set people apart throughout history," the U.S. President said on his message.

"At the heart of his efforts lies a fundamental truth about our common humanity: that it is our sacred obligation to spend our time here on earth working together to forge a brighter future for all – including for generations that have not yet come to be," he added.

"I hope the years ahead bring continued blessings to Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew's ministry, and I send all those marking this special milestone my very best wishes."

[02] EU-Turkey deal must continue to function, says EU migration commissioner

The agreement on migration signed between the European Union and Turkey must continue to function, EU Commissioner for Migration Dimitris Avramopoulos said on Saturday, adding it would be "disastrous" if it fell through.

He was speaking at the 5th Thessaloniki International Symposium held at "Olympion", on the topic "Europe in crisis: Refugees, Brexit, Grexit and all that".

Avramopoulos said the deal must be respected and implemented, as it has significantly lowered the flows of refugees to Europe, but noted the need for better management of the situation through a more functional asylum system on the islands.

He also said it is necessary to improve coordination and cooperation concerning the protection of the EU's outer borders, which is why the creation of the European coast and border guard is a "historic accomplishment".

The symposium is organized by the Northern Greece Entrepreneurs Cultural Society, the Navarino Network and the Konrad Adenauer Stiftung.

[03] Mesolonghi asks to be declared in state of emergency after thunderstorm

The prefecture of western Greece sent a request to the general secretariat of civil protectionto declare Mesolonghi in a state of emergency, following the intense thunderstorm that hit the region along with other parts of the country on Saturday.

In a letter requesting the state of emergency, Mesolonghi mayor Nikos Karapanos said the unprecedented volume of water that swept through the area early this morning flooded houses and pens, as well as cotton, olive and vegetable crops. The city also went dark after lighting hit a power pole.

In Athens, the fire department said it received over 100 calls after a thunderstorm swept through the city, causing floods and tree falls.

Crews were called to pump out water from basements and remove tree branches in the center of Athens, the northern suburbs and Ilion in western Attica. Floods were also reported in the cities of Patras, Nafpaktos and Preveza.
