  • [01] PM Alexis Tsipras and Albanian counterpart Edi Rama hold talks on the phone

Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras spoke on the telephone with Albanian Prime Minister Edi Rama on Tuesday, at the latter's request.

A press release from the Greek prime minister's press office said that the two leaders emphasised the importance of bilateral relations for the benefit of both the Greek and Albanian peoples, as well as the surrounding region.

The Greek prime minister expressed his continued dedication to this goal but added that recent actions and increasingly nationalist rhetoric on the Albanian side undermined a climate of confidence that was necessary for the progress of bilateral relations.

Tsipras highlighted the need for substantive steps and tangible results in the two countries' cooperation, for which Greece has set a series of initiatives in motion. In addition, he noted that the protection of the rights of the ethnic Greek minority was a foremost issue in relations between the two countries and a fundamental condition for Albania's European progress.

[05] Work on metro projects progressing rapidly, says Attiko Metro Board Chairman

Work on the Thessaloniki, Piraeus and Athens metro was continuing at a fast pace, in spite of the ongoing economic crisis, Attiko Metro Board Chairman Yiannis Mylopoulos said in an interview with the Athens-Macedonian News Agency (ANA) on Tuesday. He said the expansion of these metro systems was continuing as they would make a decisive contribution to the national target of emerging from the crisis.

Mylopoulos announced that a tender procedure for the first section of the Athens metro line 4, with 14 stations between Alsos Veikou and Goudi, will be held within the first five months of 2017. This line was expected to change the face of Athens' public transport and greatly improve life in the Greek capital, reducing traffic in densely populated areas of the city that were not served by any fixed-rail connection until now. The work was expected to start in 2018 and be completed in 2025, he added.

There were also plans to extend the tram network and metro line 3 toward Piraeus, with the new tram line due to be delivered in 2017 and the metro within 2020, he said.

Regarding the problem-ridden Thessaloniki metro system, Mylopoulos said work had begun again after the problems were all resolved, with the project's implementation now progressing at a rapid pace on all fronts and with its financing secured. This was scheduled to go into operation in 2020, he added.
