  • [01] Tsipras: Trilateral cooperation is our strategic choice

    The trilateral Greece-Cyprus-Israel cooperation is our strategic choice, Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras on Thursday said in joint statements with Cyprus President Nicos Anastasiades and Israel's Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

    "We spoke with excitement about issues we agree on and with honestly about issues we disagree on," he said. Tsipras stressed that the next trilateral meeting will take place in Thessaloniki, a city with great historical significance for the common bonds of Greece and Israel.

    "We aim to turn Greece into an energy transport center of Israeli and Cypriot gas," he said and welcomed Netanyahu's proposal for a joint force to deal with natural disasters.

    "Terrorism is a global threat," Tsipras said. Moreover, he stressed the importance of a just and viable solution to the Cyprus problem and expressed the full support of Greece to the efforts of the Cypriot President, Nicos Anastasiades.

    On his part, Netanyahu said that the trilateral meeting demonstrates "our shared values and real friendship."

    [02] Brussels recommends sending asylum-seekers back to Greece as of March

    The European Commission said on Thursday that member states should be allowed to send some asylum-seekers back to Greece as of March 15.

    The European Commission said that Greece has improved in hosting and registering arriving asylum-seekers.

    It recommended that EU states be allowed to send back to Greece asylum-seekers who enter the bloc that way and make it deeper into Europe from mid-March onwards. The recommendation does not apply to those who have already made that journey.

    [03] Labour Minister Achtsioglou visits Brussels

    Labour Minister Efi Achtsioglou will represent Greece to the Council of Ministers of Employment and Social Policy of the European Union held in Brussels.

    The European Pillar of Social Rights will dominate the meeting while another issue to be discussed is the progress made in the directive regarding the mobility of employees.

    [04] Seasonally adjusted unemployment at 23.1% in September

    The Hellenic Statistical Authority (ELSTAT) announced on Thursday the seasonally adjusted unemployment rate for

    September 2016.

    â€' The seasonally adjusted unemployment rate in September 2016 was 23.1% compared to

    24.7% in September 2015 and the downward revised 23.3% in August 2016. The number of

    employed amounted to 3,690,168 persons. The number of unemployed amounted to

    1,111,490 while the number of inactive to 3,237,622. The corresponding figures for September

    2011 to 2016 are presented in Table 1.

    â€' The number of employed persons increased by 60,544 persons compared with September

    2015 (a 1.7% rate of increase) and by 5,256 persons compared with August 2016 (a 0.1% rate

    of increase).

    â€' Unemployed persons decreased by 81,013 persons compared with September 2015 (a 6.8%

    rate of decrease) and by 9,903 persons compared with August 2016 (a 0.9% rate of decrease).

    â€' Inactive persons, i.e. persons that neither work neither look for a job, decreased by 17,556

    persons compared with September 2015 (a 0.5% rate of decrease) and increased by 1,571

    persons compared with August 2016.
