  • [01] Government, opposition exchange fire over PM's economic aid plan during budget debate

A debate in parliament on the 2017 state budget resumed on Friday morning with the government defending its policies and noting the steady steps taken towards exiting the crisis and the opposition focusing its criticism on Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras' announced economic assistance for low-income pensioners and the suspension of the VAT rise on the islands of the northern Aegean.

SYRIZA MP Dimitris Rizos accused those who attack the government that they are "judging others by their own standards", adding it will continue efforts to help weaker social groups "ransacked by the previous policies of New Democracy and PASOK".

On his side, Democratic Coalition MP Kostas Skandalidis decried Tsipras' announcements as "benefit talk for the impoverished pensioners" which constitutes "a confession of defeat".

Communist Party MP Kostas Stergiou said the measures announced on Thursday throw "breadcrumbs" to pensioners and can only be seen as a "provocation and mockery".

[02] Frontex rescues 66 refugees and migrants on islet off Chios

An Italian Frontex ship rescued 66 refugees and migrants stranded on the islet of Paspargos, near Chios on Friday morning, adding to the 200 people found earlier today during four separate search and rescue operations near Lesvos.

The boat with the refugees and migrants had entered Greek territorial waters when it was spotted by Frontex and all passengers were transferred to the port of Chios.

[03] NMMA presents dance performance inspired by Pessoa's 'The Walker'

A solo-performance by choreographer Persa Stamatopoulou on Dec. 18-19 will conclude the National Museum of Modern Art's (NMMA) "Prologues" program which opened the venue's new halls to the public ahead of its official inauguration.

During the performance titled "Displacement – The Road", dancer Tasos Karachalios combines the continuous displacement of the body, through variations in weight, axis, position and gaze, with the idea of a world which is in an increasingly violent and continuous redistribution, common grounds and benchmarks between them are sought.

The performance, which retraces the timelessness of human displacement, is inspired by Fernando Pessoa's book titled "The Walker" and by using the body and sound as tools, approaches and records a route of overturns, pauses, alertness, redefinition and reconstruction.

With the collaboration of the musician Sakis Kleisiaris (original music composition) a sound environment is created, as a musical score, on which the kinetic action gradually unfolds. The performer – dancer, as a traveler in space and time, experiments with a simple, abstract kinetic vocabulary, redefining each time his position and perspective.

The event will start at 19:00 and will last 40 minutes. Entry is free with admission tickets that will be distributed by EMST on a first come first served basis one hour before the performance.

The performance is supported by the J. F. Costopoulos Foundation.
