  • [01] Early elections are not part of our planning, says gov't spokesman Tzanakopoulos

"Early elections are not, in any case, part of our planning. We will not hand over the country to the lenders' demands," stated on Monday government spokesman and Minister of State Dimitris Tzanakopoulos speaking to radio "Parapolitika".

We hope that in August 2018 we will exit the memoranda and the supervisions. Even if, which is highly unlikely, the second review delays we will not go to elections. The country does not need elections, said Tzanakopoulos.

[02] ND is spreading early elections scenarios, says Digital Policy Min. Pappas

There will not be early elections... Elections will be held in 2019," Digital Policy Minister Nikos Pappas on Monday said in statements to ANT1.

Pappas said that main opposition New Democracy (ND) is spreading these rumours. "Mitsotakis (Kyriakos, ND leader) asks for elections in order to tame his parliamentary group," he added.

He estimated that the second programme review will be concluded soon and it will be in Greece's interest.

Pappas underlined that Schaeuble (Wolfgang, German Finance Minister) and the IMF are on the same line adding that less and less people consider that the Greek programme cannot exist without the IMF.

He concluded that the government's priority is to support the low incomers.

[03] The rivers in Zagorohoria have frozen

The river of Voidomatis in Zagorohoria, in the Epirus region, froze, offering trekkers the opportunity to promenade on ice.

Despite the sunlight, temperatures in many areas of Epirus have dropped under zero. According to the Athens Observatory meteo station, the lowest temperature -10.4C was recorded in eastern Zagori.

[04] 164 migrants, mostly Africans, arrived on Lesvos in the last 24h

164 new refugees and migrants, mostly from Africa, arrived on the island of Lesvos in the last 24 hours.

Meanwhile, no refugees or migrants arrivals were recorded on Chios or Samos.

According to police, 11,156 persons who have sought asylum in Greece were still trapped on Chios, Lesvos and Samos on Monday

[05] FM Kotzias in Cairo on Tuesday

Foreign Minister Nikos Kotzias will attend the 4th European Union-Arab League Ministerial Meeting which is taking place on Tuesday 20 December at the Arab League headquarters in Cairo.

Discussion will focus on the prospects for strengthening and intensifying interregional cooperation and dialogue, while the Ministerial Meeting will culminate in the two organizations' adoption of a Joint Cooperation Programme for 2016-2018 and the EU-Arab League Declaration.

[06] Russian tourists flow up in 2017; investments underway

Russian tourists to Greece are expected to increase in 2017, Konstantinos Gambaeridis, founding member of the cultural centre "Russian House" and director of St. Petersburg governor, said in statements to the Athens-Macedonian News Agency's radio station Praktoreio 104.9 FM.

"We are waiting a lot of tourists in 2017 because the problem of the visa has been overcome. Almost all the Russians who wished so, have been granted a visa thanks to the work of the Greek embassy in Moscow," he underlined.

He also said that discussions are underway for several tourist investments in the region of Macedonia. "The main sector for investments is tourism," he said, adding: "There is interest in Northern Greece from Russian investors. Where Russians tourists go, investments follow. This is obvious in Chalkidiki and we try to apply it to other areas of Greece."
